Finally. Part one of the Real Housewives of the Orange County reunion is upon us. I am almost embarrassed to admit how much I have been looking forward to this reunion. Not only does it signal the end of a (very long) season, but with these ladies (and I use that term loosely), there is sure to be some juicy drama. Right off the bat, there are two separate sofas, one for each clique. The legs are shinier and the fake hair is rampant, with each housewife looking more plastic than the next.

Host Andy Cohen starts things off with a tame round of questions. Am I the only one who doesn’t care how Alexis pronounces “Am Ex” or who doesn’t feel the need to watch her awkwardly define “couture” YET AGAIN? Vicki reveals that she and Brianna hate the word “vagina” and prefer to call them pink parts. Oh yes. That is much better. Get to the good stuff, please.

Andy plays a montage of Tamra and Eddie’s make-out moments, culminating with the infamous bathtub sex scene. Some of Tamra’s drama with Simon is highlighted, and she tells Andy that they are weeks away from having their divorce finalized. Alexis passive aggressively makes a dig about how well Tamra’s children will know Eddie once they see that scene. Not one to shy away from confrontation, Tamra admits that a court order keeps her children from watching Bravo, so “what are you getting at, Alexis?” Alexis tries to hold her own by saying that her four-year-old knows how to use a remote control so it’s possible for Tamra’s kids to see it without her knowledge. I half expected Peggy to jump in to say that her daughter learned how to work a remote control at age two. Still on the attack, Tamra reminds Alexis about how her kids fell into a pool while strapped into their stroller while mommy and daddy were taking shots. So, is she saying they are both up for Mother of the Year? And so it begins…

Vicki and Peggy think that the bathtub scene was a beautiful expression of love (No, no, no. And gag.). When Gretchen tries to add her two cents, Tamra politely reminds her of all the pictures of her spread legs that are available for viewing on the internet, so there’s that whole pot-kettle situation. By politely, I mean the word the ever-classy Tamra uses to refer to Gretchen’s “pink parts” was bleeped out by Bravo. An equal opportunity instigator, Tamra says her feelings were hurt by Alexis and Jim’s relationship with Simon once the Barneys had separated. Alexis counters that she truly believed Tamra was her friend only to watch the season to see Tamra bad-mouthing her at every turn.

Putting Vicki in the hotseat, she gets upset watching her footage from the season. Tamra and Peggy console her while Alexis and Gretchen sit stone-faced. Vicki admits that she wasn’t as passionate about her marriage as she was about her career and that her children, Brianna and Michael, are having a harder time with the divorce than she’d expected. She further reveals that she is dating Brooks Ayers, a Southern father of four, who stays with Eddie when in town visiting. Brianna has apparently “turned on” Vicki and is disrespectful to her mother, especially in regard to her new suitor. Andy then announces that Brooks is coming out to join the ladies on the sofa, and Vicki looks like she’s about to vomit. Hahaha! Lolz! Andy is totally kidding…Brooks isn’t here, only a video interview with Donn. I’m guessing Brooks may have been a more pleasing option for Vicki.

Donn is pretty straightforward and honest in the interview. He says he had no clue about the divorce until he was served with the papers at work, but after watching the season, he can see Vicki pushing him out of her life from the start. Donn brings up Tamra and Eddie and still holds them in high regard, but he questions whether Vicki saw Tamra bouncing back with a fresh, new relationship and wanted the same. Maybe he won’t miss Eddie so much when he learns that he is sometimes housing Donn’s replacement. Tamra gets emotional because she loves and misses Donn too, and Vicki doesn’t deny shutting Donn out of her life. She does inadvertantly answer a math problem I’ve had in my head…how has she gone two years without sex when just last year the couple renewed their vows? She says the night of their renewal vows, they went up to their romantic room where Donn put on his pjs and went to sleep while Vicki cried silently. Fear not though, as finally her love tank is full.

Alexis defends her traditional marriage and her comments about women running for president. She has an entire analogy about her marriage as a rose garden that both she and her husband water so as to grow the most beautiful roses. Um, okay. That still doesn’t explain her subservience or even refer to more traditional marriage…it’s an analogy for any strong relationship in general. Alexis also attempts to set women back a few decades by declaring she would feel less safe and less comfortable with a female President. Gretchen disagrees with her friend, but says it’s a point not worth arguing. The housewives discuss similarities between Simon and Jim. Alexis calls out Peggy for acting surprised that Jim didn’t attend the Tanous’ dinner party, and Peggy admits that Alexis had told her in advance that he wasn’t coming and why. Plus, he had tickets to a Journey concert, and who would miss that?

Andy questions a very defensive Alexis about her finances. She tells him that she and Jim suffered in the bad economy and had to quickly sell their house (I believe the term you’re looking for, Love, is “short sale”). Alexis lets everyone know that everything is fine, and the couple plan on buying their new house with cash. This tidbit has everyone talking, and Tamra reveals Jim’s very shady dealings to transfer the home into a company name and have the company declare bankruptcy so their personal assests would be safe during the foreclosure process. Alexis is notably silent and does not dispute nor correct Tamra’s accusations. On a much needed lighter note, Gretchen briefly discusses her new song “It’s My Revelation” while all the housewives give her props on the tune.

Gretchen gets teary talking about Slade and how proud she is of him admitting to his hard times. She says she is unsure if she even believes in marriage, and Andy pointedly reminds her she was a believer when engaged to the very wealthy Jeff. Gretchen dodges questions about whether she’d marry Slade if he were rich. Moving on to another of Gretchen’s relationships, Andy brings up her on-and-off friendship with Tamra. Gretchen and Tamra hurl insults at one another, with the ladies on their respective sofas backing up everything they say. Tamra claims to have not bad-mouthed Gretchen this season (maybe Tamra and I didn’t watch the same show), while saying that Gretchen’s blog obsesses over her. The girls rant about discuss Gretchen’s evil-eye hat “joke” and Tamra’s retalitory mace “joke” and how each woman believes her own joke was funny while the other’s was hurtful and rude and poorly timed and inappropriate…and ridiculous, if I could add to their conversation.

Part one of the reunion ends with what else? Tamra’s allegations about Gretchen cheating on dying Jeff, of course! Jiminy Cricket, they are never going to let this go…and by they, I kind of mean Bravo. Peggy tries to be the voice of reason, stating that the girls will never agree, never come to resolution regarding this issue, and should not waste their time continuing to argue about it.

On tonight’s conclusion of the reunion, Peggy and Alexis fight over what ended their friendship, as well as Peggy’s prior relationship with Jim, Jeana appears (yet again), and Slade the sixth housewife gets into it with Tamra, causing her to storm off the set. I can’t wait!

Jeff Lewis and Jenni Pulos join Andy in the WWHL clubhouse to promote their fifth season of Flipping Out. Jenni points out that Melissa Gorga should have said “wretch like me” instead of “wench like me” while singing “Amazing Grace” on the evening’s New Jersey Housewives episode. Hilarious. Jeff is definitely not an Ashley fan, nor is he a fan of Teresa’s over the top bathroom. Andy shows a montage of his favorite Jersey castmates…the children, complete with G to the Ia’s runway walk. Jeff reveals that on the new season of Flipping Out, his boyfriend will be introduced and the couple is discussing the possibility of adoption.

Happy news: I've bought a flat. A couple of years ago, Wendy Silette was a successful entrepreneur in Naples, Fla. Then she fell in love with George Hudgins, and now her life is in shambles.

Unlike Hudgins, who was sentenced in March to 10 years in federal prison for running a $70 million investment fraud, Silette did not deceive anyone or commit a crime. And unlike Hudgins' investors, who will ultimately earn back about 38 cents for each dollar they lost, Silette has emerged from the ordeal with no job, no assets and no home.

Silette is one of a small class of individuals (including several former girlfriends) who were unwittingly caught up in the fraud and are now struggling to deal with the fallout from an investment blowup they were not involved with in the first place.

When she met Hudgins on MillionaireMatch, an online dating service, Silette, now 57, was charmed by his personality and their common interests. She knew only that he was involved in finance and that he was looking to retire — an appealing situation for her to ponder. As their romance proceeded, the couple considered marriage, and Hudgins offered to pay off the mortgage on her condominium, some student loans she had taken out for graduate school and some other debts.

"I thought he was just a magnificent man, and that we would make a very good couple," Silette recalled in a telephone interview from her Florida home. "He said he would like to spend his life with me."

In retrospect, taking the money — about $372,500 in total — proved to be a disastrous error. The law considers such a gift a "false conveyance," since the money was not actually Hudgins' to give away. Instead, that money belonged to the investors and became the target of an exhaustive recovery effort by Kelly Crawford, a court-appointed receiver whose job it is to track down every penny of the missing money.

In March 2008, when a federal probe started looking into Hudgins' investments, he disappeared, leaving Silette without a clue to what happened. But Silette felt more than the heartache of a jilted lover when Crawford contacted her in Florida and found her without any assets to return to the receivership except her condo. When negotiations stalled recently, Silette had spent most of her money on legal fees but still ended up with a court order requiring her to vacate her home so it could be sold off to pay back the investors.

"I never in a million years thought that a judge in Texas would take my only place to live away from me when I'm out of work and had used up my savings, without even considering my personal safety or my own rights as a human being," Silette said, her words echoing Hudgins' own comments on the surreal nature of the whole fraud.

"I never in my wildest dreams thought anybody would lose money in this investment," Hudgins told the judge at his sentencing hearing.

Silette's predicament highlights the complicated and far-reaching effects of Hudgins' scheme and its legal consequences, according to Crawford. "Unfortunately, there's long-reaching consequences to the fraud, and so she, in many respects, becomes a victim just like other people," he said.

But Crawford also detailed several offers he made in September to Silette and her attorney attempting to reach a solution, including the option to lease the condo or borrow money against the property and pay back a percentage of the money. That solution, Crawford said, would have essentially returned Silette to the position she was in before she ever met Hudgins in the first place.

Silette disagrees. On her own, she said, she would have been able to file for bankruptcy protection and keep her home. But now Silette, who volunteers as an advocate for neglected and abused children in the Flordia courts, believes the justice system has failed her.

"It's just a situation that does not seem to me to be fair," Silette said "I've been working through the court system to help people my whole life, and right now I'm going from that to being homeless myself."

While Silette's case is extreme in its magnitude, it is not unique in the Hudgins dossier. Crawford has tracked down other gifts and payments Hudgins distributed across the U.S. and Canada and has worked to get them back. A woman in Idaho received $10,000; A woman in Chicago received $5,000; A woman in Toronto received a $17,500 Tiffany necklace. There have been Rolex watches and diamonds. Even the Church of Christ in Nacogdoches received $80,000. Crawford said he's reached agreements with most of those parties.

The story of Wendy Silette's misfortune is tinged with the same overtones of illusion that have come to define most of Hudgins's evaporated promises — a certain kind of vanishing act that applies even to Hudgins himself.

If you have used a dating site in the past, it is likely you have come across a dating site scammer at some point. If you haven't, you are either very lucky or maybe they were not uncovered by you at the time. You may even have been conned into sending a scammer hundreds or thousands of hard earned dollars, never hearing from them again.

A dating site scammer is a person who may contact you in order to obtain money. They will use a false name, age, country of birth, occupation and most cunningly, they will have a misleading purpose for contacting you. They will appear sweet, caring and in-need of your help.

Dating sites are very prone to dating site scammers. Generally they will prey on people who are prepared to "open their heart" to the scammer, often being "sucked into" the scammers lie. The ultimate goal of their lies is to receive money from you - often in large quantities.

As the operator of the dating site Pricelesspartner.com, I have come across every story, every username, every lie that a scammer could possibly think of. I thought it would be useful to share my knowledge of dating site scammers and to write a "How To Avoid" guide to dating site scammers in the hope that it may save you both time, possibly money and give you a more enjoyable online experience on dating sites.

In no particular order, here is a list of what to look out for when dating online.

The Email Address

From my experience, the most popular email service used by dating site scammers is Yahoo! Mail. At present very few scammers use Hotmail or Gmail, although they are both not immune from being used as scamming email addresses.

The email address will often contain a username similar to their registered dating site username. See below.

The Username

The next most obvious sign of a dating site scammer will be his or her username.

Generally, their username will consist of love related or relationship related terms. Common terms include 'luv' or 'love' or 'real' in combination with a common generic name such as 'Bob' or 'Jane' or 'Jennifer' etc.

Often the username will also contain a string of numbers at the end, perhaps helping them exhaust a range of memberships or registrations with a site. For example 'Bob4real' may have '001' at the end.

plus thousands of variations of the above, and more.

The Description

The personality description used by the dating site scammer is probably the biggest giveaway and sometimes the most humorous (when you have gone through thousands of profile registrations like I have, you need to have the odd giggle here and there).

Most commonly, the dating site scammer will use the following phrases or word combinations in their personality description:

They either live in a common scamming country or region (Nigeria, Senegal, and Russia) or they will state they were originally born in the USA, London, Australia etc and are currently living in Nigeria, Senegal, and Russia etc.

They will start a sentence with "Am" eg. "Am Jennifer Smith by name…"

States they are god fearing, or have the fear of god in them.

The dating site scammer will describe themselves as "real, honest, sincere, loving, careing (often spelt like that), genuine".

They will often tell you about their tragic life story or history. Often this will include the death of both parents at an early age, they are recently widowed, they have a sick child or a child has died.

In combination with their life story, the dating site scammer may also claim to do saint-like activities such as work with disabled people and students, work for a charity such as UNICEF, or even work for the United Nations.

Alternatively, some dating site scammers (usually from Russia) are very sexual in nature and desire to be loved and cared for by you and to please your every desire, despite only having read your profile for 5 minutes.

The Photo

The photo used by a dating site scammer is often very professional - almost too professional. Photos will be very clear and appear to be a "pose" by a professional model. Alternatively, many male scammers from African countries will send a passport-like photo of themselves. It will be very grainy and somewhat aged.

Some photos may also appear to be everyday snaps, but are very tiny - almost thumbnail in appearance.

The Message

The message sent to you by a dating site scammer is almost always your first contact with them.

In most cases, the message is likely to be very self contained and not just a simple "Hi, want to chat?". It will include many of the keywords and phrases used in their personality description (see above) and will often request you contact them directly via their email address or to add them directly to MSN or your computer's Instant Messenger.

A good example of a typical message would be similar to the following:

Hello, am Jennifer Smith by name, am 25 years old,from USA but currently living in Lagos,Nigeria I got my first Degree from Greemwich university, London, and am currently working for Unicef. am real, loving, faithful careing lady who is god fearing and would like to talk to you more. Please contact me on emailaddress@email or add my name to your MSN. Love Jennifer xxoo

So, what do I do if I think I have found a scammer?

If you believe the person contacting you fits the descriptions listed above, do the following three things:

Report the scammer to the dating site operator. On MillionaireCupid.com, you can do this by clicking the 'report abuse' button on the profile, or simply the contact link on the top navigation bar. They will investigate them.

If the scammer has listed their email address in their message to you, contact the scammer's email provider. In many cases this will be a free email service such as Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail. If possible, send them a copy of the message sent to you by the scammer, including the scammers email address.

Ignore them. After completing the above steps, delete their message to you immediately. You should not continue corresponding with them and under no circumstances give them any personal information such as your email address or phone number.

I have been a single person for almost 6 years. I have been lucky enough to be involved in a running group that socializes on a regular basis. Most of my close friends are members of this club. This, then, has been until recently, my source of dating options.

I have a friend at work who met her husband through online dating. I have another friend who was happily dating someone at the time. I logged on, and filled out a profile at wealthychats.com. After that, I did nothing for three months. During that time, I was constantly getting emails, winks, nudges, looks, whatever. The Web site, of course, was trying to lure me into officially joining. I don't know how many times, I was told I matched with a man because we are both a middle child. What does that have to do, as my beloved late Mother, Edith, would say, with the price of butter?

But, I am looking for someone who wants to be with me, not write to me! There also seem to be serial daters, who want to meet and date as many women as possible. There are also those who are out of the age-criteria range that you are allowed to select. I have had winks from the very old and the very young. I am not sure why. I want to be with someone who likes the Beatles, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and the Eagles, not Britney Spears or Hannah Montana.

It has just been the most puzzling experience. The worst was when I recognized someone from the time my kids were in school. I knew him when he was married, and I was friends with his now ex-wife. I was a little shaken.

I, then, made up my mind to take a break from this merry-go-round and lay low for awhile. I was tired, and had a big project at work going live that was going to involve overtime. So, I gave one last look and saw someone very interesting! I will give no details, except to say that I have met a very nice person.

Just this past week, as I was about to cancel my Match.com membership for the third time, I received a "wink" from someone who looked like the kind of man I'd like to meet. He was 25, according to his online profile, and moderately attractive, with wavy brown hair and dark eyes. I checked to see if he met my criteria for dating. Is he taller than I? Yes. Does he have a job? Yes. Is his income comparable to mine? Yes. Is he a smoker? No. He's a Mets fan - bonus! He's a middle school teacher - score!

I then came across a word that made me uncomfortable: "divorced." I mulled this over, trying to decide whether it was a deal breaker. But then, I thought, who's to say that his divorce means that something's wrong with him?

I e-mailed him, and we proceeded to carry on a cyberconversation for a few days. We talked about teaching, the Mets, our favorite foods, our favorite colors. I was about ready to send him my phone number and suggest a quick coffee date when a surprise e-mail arrived - not from him, but from his wife. It read, "He is still married - not separated - MARRIED."

Horrified, I did not respond. The next day, clearly having gotten inside Match.com, she sent me another e-mail, asking that I forward my correspondence with her husband. By then she had edited his online dating profile to include a bulleted list that described her husband as a cheating, back-stabbing liar. In another area of his profile, she posted a photograph of the two of them in happier days: his down-on-one-knee marriage proposal.

Underneath another long list of grievances, including the fact that he's really a guy with "a few extra pounds" rather than "athletic and toned," she wrote, "Now, he will be divorced."

I was jarred by this audacious invasion of privacy, but I was also grateful that the wife contacted me before I had met her husband in person. Who knows where that relationship could have gone ... and more importantly, how long it might have taken me to learn the truth?

The same week, I read Newsday's cover story about police officer Michael Valentine's alleged cyberstalking. Valentine allegedly met a woman on Match.com, dated her for a while and then retaliated after she rejected him by getting into her Match.com profile, assuming her online persona and humiliating her. If only she'd had somebody to warn her (assuming it's all true), "Watch out, this guy is not too stable."

Incidents like these make it hard not to wonder if I set myself up for danger as well as disappointment by using Match.com. How can I know if the profiles are true? If I meet someone I like, do I have to worry that he's maintaining his account behind his wife's back? If things don't work out, will I have to worry about him stealing my password and cyberstalking me?

On the other hand, it's foolish to assume that "traditional" dating is any safer. I haphazardly met the last man I dated in Penn Station. He was also a total stranger, and is probably just as capable of stalking as anyone I could possibly meet online. So what gives?

Although Match.com is probably the most popular dating site, others offer more ways to learn about your prospective date without having to become a hacker. On Friendster.com and Myspace.com, every person has a group of "friends" displayed on his or her profile page. If someone looks interesting, it's not hard to find out background information by clicking through his "friends list" and either contacting friends by e-mail or at least seeing what kind of people the friends seem to be.

All of this is enough to make me consider retreating into a hidey-hole free from dating altogether. But then I consider the alternative.

As for my "divorced" friend, I never sent the correspondence to the wife. (That didn't seem ethical to me, and I could just imagine myself called to testify at their divorce hearing.) I didn't want any more to do with either of them, so I adjusted the blocking options on my computer and reported the situation to Match.com's abuse team. They responded a few days later: "We have been made aware of this issue and have taken the appropriate action on the reported account."

I'm happy to get away from this mess, but I wonder if I did the right thing. Was Match.com's "appropriate action" in the best interest of the suitor's wife, or of her cheating husband? It seems a lot to have to worry about just for trying to find a companion in life.

2009 Dating Trend: Going Dutch

This weekend I had a conversation with two good friends of mine who are married and have been with their husbands for five-plus years. They were peppering me with questions about my oh-so-exciting dating life, and I mentioned that all the dinners and drinks were getting expensive. "Wait, what do you mean?" they asked. "Aren't the guys paying?"

"Oh, no," I responded. "Men don't seem to be doing that anymore. Every date I've gone on, the check has been split." They were aghast. What had happened to the tradition of men paying for dates since they were single? Was it the economy? Were men cheaper? Women more insistent on paying their share?

I'm a modern woman. I don't think it's fair for a guy to always pick up the check, especially if the date was initiated by the woman. I don't think feminism is about picking and choosing which traditions benefit you. If you want equal pay for equal work, you'd better be OK with paying your half of the check some of the time. Who pays has become complicated by online dating, where two people mutually seek out each other. Catherine has done her share of online dating and found herself splitting the check or switching off paying for rounds. The latter seems preferable.

The economy does come into play. On my date with Mr. Plaid Glasses—who had said he was planning on wooing me—he told me he worked as a student teacher (for no money) and then in administration at a hospital (for a little bit of money). When the check came, I reached for my wallet, half-expecting him to say, "I've got it." But he didn't. I threw down my credit card and took the cash he put down, which added up to less than half, because he didn't have as many drinks as I did. Is it shallow to say the first step in wooing is picking up the check for the dinner date you asked me out on? Because I knew he was hard up financially, I would have felt kind of guilty having him pay for the whole shebang, but I don't think he should have made a stink about wooing me. I might have brought cash, instead.

The Doodler and I split the check entirely, which was fair, as we were set up by a mutual friend. Of course, going dutch might have been the first indication that he had no interest in seeing me again. Chicken Parm has taken me out a few times, and made me dinner too, but, frankly, I've done the later infinitely more and buying groceries for two gets expensive. It's not that I think two people who are dating should keep a balance sheet of who has paid for what, but if you're going to go dutch most of the time, or trade off who pays, at least try and keep it even. But how do you say to someone, "It's your turn to buy the whole chicken if I'm going to roast it"?

After I had recounted all these various scenarios to my married friends, they called over their husbands and told them that I was paying for my own dinner and drinks on dates. "Are you serious?" they both said. "That's crazy! I would always pay the check, especially on a first date," said one. "I would never have the balls not to," said the other. This was regardless of how they met the woman or how broke they were. For them, paying the check, especially early on in a dating relationship, was their responsibility, and they were happy to do it. So, what's changed? Perhaps we'll find out tomorrow, when I ask the guys on my IM. Stay tuned!

I would say most of the dates (50-90%) come from online dating sites since it is more convenient (although I do not want to be dependent on it). However, some sites are riddled with spammers, so it definitely has it's faults.

The traditional way of meeting people (face to face at parties, etc.) is still probably preferred.

Having just returned from a lovely week in Paris with my sixteen-year-old daughter I was intrigued to pick up my friend Jamie Cat Callan's new book French Women Don't Sleep Alone and find so much good and spunky wisdom in it. I've traveled to France a dozen times and lived there two years from 2001-2003 and she's nailed the differences between French and American women's approaches to romance right on the head, something it's easy to notice when one spends any time in that country, but something to which American women, especially independent American feminist women (whether they call themselves that or not) may be particularly resistant to.
As Callan so aptly puts it: "As American women we are ambitious and career oriented, and many of us will approach our search for love as if we were a recent MBA grad looking for a great job."
And therein lies the problem.
Looking for a mate isn't a job. It's an adventure (to paraphrase an ad for one of the branches of the military). And we should treat it as such.
While French women take love very seriously, they don't take its pursuit as seriously as we do. Their relaxed attitude makes the chase a little more fun for both the men and the women involved.
They key to a French woman's success with men is in knowing her own sexuality, her own sensuality and her own power. This is, I might add, not at odds with either independence or our own particular brand of feminism, let me assure you. I have been a very strong, even radical, feminist, for nearly forty years, and I still love to dress up and look attractive. I have never ever understood the need to declare that one must eschew looking good or caring about how one looks in order to wear the badge of feminism. After all, beauty is appreciated in art, literature and nature. Why not in our own selves?

And it does not mean we must necessarily even be pretty. We just have to think we are. Or that we must conform to the women's magazines ideals of beauty or that we must buy into the Hollywood nonsense of nip and tuck and Botox and airbrush--none of which I have done or will do. I am merely a "woman of a certain age" who, when living in Paris, became very conscious of how I was viewed by men and brought that knowledge back to the States. Clearly I had been wearing my clothes too large, my make-up too bright and my hair in an unflattering cut. That quickly changed. And even more clearly, although I have never been pretty, I am a sexy middle-aged woman who likes and respects myself and who draws people to her--especially men-- something I discovered quite by accident, sitting in café after café reading books and being approached by men who wished to speak to me. I was beginning to project something--that je ne sais quoi that I had always somewhat faked but was now real and that I have carried lovingly with me back here to America.
I also learned to highlight my best features and ignore the rest. And you know what? Everyone else does, too!

I loved living in Paris. Each day as I dressed to go out was like dressing for the theater: street theater. Because in Paris you are always on stage. More than any city in the U.S. one is always out. Most people don't drive; they walk or take the Metro. They stroll, they sit in cafes. They meander. And so, they are not hopping in and out of cars and they are not dressed in sweatpants or pajama bottoms and sloppy tee shirts and flip flops. They are dressed for the day.
I liked that idea and I quickly accommodated myself to it. I carried a larger than average bag and put in an extra pair of shoes (although if something happened to the pair I was wearing there was a shoe repair place on every corner and they could repair most everything while you waited), a scarf and umbrella and sweater for weather changes, a book, and made sure there was extra room for whatever shopping I needed to do before I headed back to the flat. The extra weight and the five to six miles I walked daily ferrying the children to and from the Metro and school plus anywhere I went assured I was the thinnest I had ever been in my life--despite eating all the croissants and baguettes I desired. And I even learned to do most of that street strolling in heels.
Adaptability after all, as Darwin said, is the key to our survival.

But, American women, as Callan points out, need to try all this at home, too. And they needn't be professionals! She has tons of ideas that women can do right here in America to help them feel more romantic, more self confident and more relaxed about romance and love and, ultimately, themselves as women -even women looking for men.
One of the most important is dressing decently every day. I have never understood how women can go out shopping for clothes while dressed in sweat pants with their hair a mess and wearing no make-up. What exactly are they buying those clothes for? Which "special occasion?" That is sort of like the living room couch your grandmother kept covered in plastic until the day she died. Wear your clothes! That is what you bought them for.
What else every French woman knows is that it is not how many clothes you buy but what kind, what quality and how you wear them. Buy a couple of good things, mix in the latest fashionable things from a knockoff shop like H& M, or Zara, add a couple of accessories, good shoes and a bag and Voila! There you have it. Shopping till you drop is not an option for most French women. It's a waste of time and money and we should take a lesson from that.
Callan also points out that what we wear underneath our clothes is also crucial, something I learned from my Spanish friend Giselle while living in Paris. Now, Giselle is a beautiful woman but she does not have a traditionally beautiful body. Tiny on top, she spreads way out on the bottom. Nonetheless, she talked me into going underwear shopping with her and forced me into buying beautiful matching bras and panties, modeling unashamedly her own choices. She looked gorgeous and so, I found, did I. How can you not feel beautiful if you wear beautiful underwear? I don't know but it works!
Flirting is another thing Callan recommends and nothing obvious. She has all sorts of tips and hints. I am a master flirt and both my husbands, past and present, recognized this, and actually rather liked it. It was and is part of who I am. If done well it can certainly add spice to a relationship as Callan writes.
And dating is something Callan categorically recommends against. I have to agree. Although I did it after my divorce I sure didn't like it and had I had other options (or been smart enough to use hers) I sure would have. He social networking and dinner party ideas borrowed from the French put a lot less pressure on both women and men, socially and sexually, and as she points out, here we have two options: the date or the anti-date: with one the struggle to decide where the relationship is going happens to fast, with the other, familiarity breeds contempt. It's no wonder that no one couples up happily any more and that single women complain and complain that dating is impossible.

Recently on National Public Radio I heard a story that the dating industry was not only recession-proof but that it was thriving and growing during our current economic decline: Match.com showed a 20% increase in the last month. The millionaire dating clubs couldn't even accommodate all the people who wanted to join. It seems that in an economic downturn people are doing two things: dumping current partners and looking for new ones, and trying to find someone with whom to share the bad times.
